Paradise Poker was one of the original poker rooms on the Internet, but even they are not immune to change. Paradise Poker has officially joined with the Boss Media Network, an experienced gambling software and service provider. The Swedish run network has plenty of experience to offer the experienced poker room, which is making the switch during the month of May. Paradise will now be on one of the busiest networks in Europe, with as many as 10,000 real-money players a day. Paradise Poker has been a front runner since its launch in 1999.

Colorado Poker Business Raided

April 30, 2007
Amy Calistri

The office of the Amateur Poker Tour, located in Wheat Ridge Colorado, was raided last week by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). No arrests were made, but records and member lists were confiscated as part of an ongoing investigation into whether the company is running an illegal gambling operation.

The Amateur Poker Tour hosts approximately a dozen free play poker tournaments a day at bars and nightclubs throughout the Denver metropolitan area. They also have a VIP player membership program where players pay $199 to be eligible for exclusive tournaments and a differentiated level of prizes. It is the VIP program that appears to be the sticking point for the CBI and Colorado Division of Gaming.
CBI agent Ralph Gagliardi was quoted in the Denver post saying, “There are a number of poker operators that are legitimate in the state. Players can join a game for free and are given chips for free. At the end of the game, the winner can trade chips in for prizes, including cash, which might come from the operator. When a host or organizer charges any kind of fee for participation, Colorado law defines the game as illegal.”

The Amateur Poker Tour is continuing operations following the raid, including their planned $500 buy-in tournament being hosted by Binion’s in Las Vegas starting on May 4th. According to their website and our phone call to their office today, they are, however, reassessing their VIP program and member benefits. They offered no further comment relative to the investigation.

On the company’s website we found this quote, “We keep hearing how, ‘The APT is so fun, it’s hard to believe it’s legal!’ ” Apparently the CBI is having a hard time believing it too.

List of Poker Variants

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The card game of poker has many variations, most of them created in the United states in the mid-1900’s.  The standard order of play applies to most of these games, but to fully specify a poker game requires details about which hand values are used, the number of betting rounds, and exactly what cards are dealt and what other actions are taken between rounds.

Popular Poker Variants

The most popular poker variants can be divided into the following groups:

Draw Poker:  Games in which players are dealt a complete hand, hiddin, and then improve it by replacing cards.  The most common of these is Seven-card draw.

Stud Poker:  Games in which each player receives a combination of face-up cards and face-down cards in multiple betting rounds.  The most common of these are Seven-card stud and Five-card stud.

Community Card Poker:  Games in which each player’s incomplete hidden hand is combined with shared face-up cards.  The most common of these are Texas Hold ‘em and Omaha Hold ‘em.

There are many more variants on the game of poker, but these seem to be the most popular and the ones most commonly played on the internet.

The Origin Of Poker?

Poker Speak No Comments »

Many theories of where poker actually began can be found when searching for the history of poker.  Here are some of the most popular theories:

1. The Chinese Theory. Once upon a time… Emperor Mu-tsung and his wife were playing “domino cards” and one day it became poker. If you like the idea of the Chinese ancestor of poker then accept this theory and stop reading this article.

   2. The Persian Theory. It says that the game was brought to New Orleans by Persian sailors. The name of the game was “As nas”. Doesn’t sound like poker? In addition to it the deck consisted of 25 cards with 5 suits.

   3. The Indian Theory. Even Indians were gamblers! Their poker was called Ganjifa.

   4. The English Theory. The Bragg (or brag) game also could be the ancestor of Poker. One of proofs is that English Bragg incorporated bluffing.

   5. The French Theory. Those who settled in New Orleans in 1480 played a card game called Poque. And it was the first time when a deck with four suits (spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts) was used.

   6. The German Theory. “Ich Poche!” – he cried and rapped on the table. This what distinguishes the pochspiel. The player has two ways: either pass or open by saying “Ich Poche!” and rapping on the table.

It’s clear that all these games brought something to Poker. Poker is a pochspiel, bragg, ganjifa and poque all rolled in one. There are also many disputes about the name of the game, but they are not so serious as disputes about the origins. As for the name. You know two theories: French (Poque) and German (Pochspiel). The other words-ancestors could be: pukka (funny Hindu word), poke (word used by pickpockets), hocus-pocus (magic term… and somebody believes it… maybe magicians themselves?).
Anyway, it doesn’t matter where poker came from. The fact is that it is the number one card game in the world. And the types of poker we know today are not the last ones! Be prepared!

Poker is a game with a predominance of skill. Like chess, poker is a “thinking man’s” game which relies on mathematics, psychology and money management.

These are just a few of the definitions of Poker.   There is so much more to Poker than any one statement could describe and we are going to be delving into this deeper over the next few months.  Join me in playing poker and learning more about the game!
